During a presentation on Tuesday, Alphabet announced a new line of Pixel smartphones. The distinctive feature of these devices is a deeper integration of artificial intelligence technologies. Thus, the company continues its strategy of actively introducing AI into its hardware products.
Among the innovations, it’s worth noting the function of searching for information directly on screenshots. In addition, Android users have the opportunity to use the Gemini chatbot as an overlay on top of other applications. This allows you to get answers to questions and generate content in real time.
Google’s premature conference
Google broke with tradition by introducing its new Pixel smartphone line in the summer instead of the fall, as was the custom. This decision demonstrates the company’s desire to accelerate the process of introducing innovations.
Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, noted that the AI industry is full of promises, but there aren’t enough real solutions yet.
According to him, Google intends to change this situation. At a large-scale event dedicated to the presentation of new devices, Google demonstrated significant progress in the field of AI. Analysts highly praised the scale and depth of the solutions presented, recognizing Google’s leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.
Competition with Apple
The change in the traditional time frame for the unveiling of new Pixel smartphones is a sign of Google’s desire to keep up with its competitors in the field of artificial intelligence. The earlier announcement is intended to give the company an advantage ahead of the planned release of new iPhone models from Apple.
In June of this year, Apple announced a major update to its devices, including the integration of generative functions based on AI and support for the ChatGPT chatbot. Google, in turn, demonstrated the capabilities of the new Gemini language model, although some technical difficulties were revealed during the presentation. Despite this, the company announced the start of sales of new Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones in late August and early September, respectively.
The cost of the base model of Pixel 9 was increased by $100 compared to the previous generation.
What is presented in the new line?
According to research company IDC, Google’s share of the global smartphone market as of the second quarter of 2024 remains insignificant and amounts to less than 1%. The company is significantly behind the market leaders – Samsung and Apple. One of the reasons for this situation is Google’s limited presence in a number of markets and focus on the premium segment.
Despite this, in the US the company ranks fourth with a market share of 4.5%. The Pixel line of smartphones not only allows Google to demonstrate its technological achievements, but also stimulates the development of the Android developer ecosystem, which remains the most popular in the world.
One of Google’s key development areas is the introduction of artificial intelligence into consumer products. The company is actively working on integrating AI into its services, including the search engine and the Android operating system.
The new Pixel smartphones have received an updated design, improved cameras, and a new Tensor G4 processor. In addition, Google introduced new generations of Pixel Watch smartwatches and Pixel Buds wireless headphones. Particular attention was paid to the “Pulse Loss” function, which allows you to detect cardiac arrest and automatically call an ambulance.
